Hasui 巴水: Evening Moon at Nakanoshima, Sapporo; First Edition 札幌中嶋之夕月 (SOLD)

Title: Evening moon at Nakanoshima, Sapporo 札幌中嶋之夕月: Sapporo Nakanoshima no yûzuki
Series: Collection of scenic view of Japan, eastern Japan edition: Nihon fûsei shû, higashi Nihon hen Date: 1933
Unlit except for a full moon, we see a farmer watering his horse on his way home from the fields. Nakanoshima is situated in southern Sapporo on the northern island of Hokkaidô. Tall poplar trees, for which Sapporo is known, soar in the darkness. Behind them the red-orange moon hangs deep and reflects on the water. With this incredibly evocative design, Hasui transports us, giving us an intimate glimpse at a long-lost place and time in his beloved countryside. With deep purple on the horizon and woodgrain in the sky, this may be considered a first edition, with the Watanabe seal used between 1930 and 1942.
