Harunobu 春信: Courtesan Adjusting her Hairpin (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Suzuki Harunobu 鈴木春信 (1725?-1770)
Title: Courtesan Adjusting her Hairpin. Series: Thirty-six Immortal Poets
Date: ca. 1766-67

From the series “Thirty-six Poets”, a high-ranking courtesan in a contemplative moment lightly adjusts her hairpin, slender pinky delicately raised. She stands in between an andon lamp and a screen, with a koto and shamisen in the interior behind her. There is a robe hanging on the stand to the right that we may presume belongs to a guest, and she holds in her hand a packet of  intimacy tissues. Her own robes drape beautifully, the outermost one shrugged from her shoulders. In the cloud above her head is a poem by Fujiwara no Nakafumi that may compare the light in the andon to the light at Ariake. Scarce.

Condition: Excellent impression. Very good/good color and condition. Hinging remnants, verso, and some wrinkling. Dimensions: chûban 27.6 x 20.5 cm
Literature: Another example is shown in “Suzuki Harunobu” 2002, Chiba City Museum of Art, cat. number 158. Our example appears to be an earlier edition, with a more pleasing color palette. Signature: Suzuki Harunobu ga
