Hasui: Guest House in the Pines on Pond’s Edge, Smaller Version (Sunset at Kiyosumi Municipal Garden) (Sold)

Smaller horizontal format than Hotei 50, but the same design. We see an almost panoramic view of a guesthouse peeking out from a forested shore. A large pine frames the work at right. This is a smaller version of the design from the set of eight that were privately commissioned by the Mitsubishi Company in 1920. The scholar Hisao Shimizu in the 2013 Folk Museum of Ota City catalog on Hasui has shed light on these smaller versions of the 1920 set, which are unlisted in Brown/Hotei. They were published on October 20, 1934 by the Tokyo Municipal Office in a series titled "Tokyo." This one has the title "Sunset at Kiyosumi Municipal Garden", although it is the same design as "Guest House in the Pines On Pond's Edge" from 1920. Included in the attached images here may be seen the salient page from the 2013 catalog. Provenance: From the personal collection Hisao Shimizu, late Hasui scholar and former curator of the Folk Museum of Ota City.
