Title: Shinkawa at Night (Tokyo junidai, Yoru no Shinkawa)
Series: Twelve Scenes of Tokyo
Date: July, 1919 (Taishô hachi, shichi)
Two stars are positioned above two storehouses on the Shinkawa River, comprising a perfect summer evening scene. A soft yellow light glows between them. This rare pre-earthquake print is one of the most highly prized Hasui designs by the Japanese. Hasui himself wrote “It was a crystal-clear summer night, the sky just like the indigo blue of a woodblock print. There are one or two stars in the sky, and the light of the gas lamp illuminates the space between the massive storehouses.” Mint, with very subtle printing effects and a strong yellow light.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
