Proof print from the studio of the publisher, Tokyo Shôbidô, this lacks the date, title, publisher’s seal and artist’s seal. Here the trees are printed much lighter, and the road is not dappled in contrasting shade as much as the final version. There is less contrast overall than in the final version. It is possible this bears a fold mark from being surreptitiously smuggled out of the shop.
