Yoshitoshi: Drawing of Man Holding a Knife to his Own Throat
Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: Man Holding a Knife to his Own Throat
Date: ca. 1870
Preparatory drawing in sumi with red under-drawing and pentimenti (corrections) for an unpublished design. A seated man holds a knife to his throat, his shirt unbuttoned and his legs crossed. He has two companions who look alarmed. There is an exceptional amount of red under-drawing where Yoshitoshi worked out where to establish his lines. Numerous positions of the legs of the main figure were tried out, and two positions are seen for the head.
Condition: Excellent condition. Mounted on to backing paper for protection.
Dimensions: 33.3 x 24.4 cm
