Kuniyoshi: Portrait with Pentimento Drawing
Artist: Utagawa Kuniyoshi
Title: Portrait with Pentimento Drawing
Date: ca 1840s
Half-length portrait of what might be a “real” person and what might be a kabuki actor in a role. He wears formal robes, but no makeup or wig. His robe bears a crest that might be decipherable. The pasted-paper correction of the face (pentimento) shows a completely different expression; the corrective piece of paper can be lifted up to show the earlier drawing.
Condition: Paper losses; lightly mounted to backing sheet for safety.
Dimensions: 24.3 x 20.8 cm
