Title: Drawing of a Shamisen lesson
Date: Ca 1840s

A woman is playing shamisen while a man with a fan is singing gidayû songs. Probably she is giving him a lesson. Another shamisen is hanging on the wall. The writings have numbers: seventeen and eighteen. The writing is still being worked out, lending to the extemporaneous air of the composition. Hokuba was a student of Hokusai and is mainly known for his surimono designs.

A tea cup with a lid, probably for the guest student, is on the floor. Hokuba was a student of Hokusai and is mainly known for his surimono designs, which also combine poetry and image with humor.
