Artist: Kasamatsu Shiro
Title: Spring Night in Ginza (Haru no yoru, Ginza), 1st edition
Date: 1934

Terrific scene that superimposes the old Tokyo, left, with the curtained booth serving sushi, with the bustling new Tokyo, complete with blazing lights and throngs of pedestrians in fashionable clothing on the main boulevard. The bright lantern reads “Azuma Odori”, a dance festival. The willow trees that Ginza is famous for are also seen with fresh, spring leaves, adding to the spring in the steps of this scene. Scarce to find this work, Shiro’s most famous design, as a first edition, as here, with the Watanabe seal used in the 1930s, left margin, as most examples are postwar.
