Bertha Lum: Through the Night (Sold)
Artist: Bertha Lum
Title: Through the Night
Date: 1908
Also known by the title “Jinrikshas”, we see a row of riksha drivers bearing each a female passenger past the entrance of a very posh building, one with windows that glow with yellow light from within. Perhaps these ladies were attending an evening performance or some other engagement. It is unusual to find Lum prints in this unfaded condition, and this is a very scarce design. The date that Lum wrote on the print seems to read “1906”, but it is difficult to be certain.
