Beisen: Rooster and Hen (Sold)

A rooster directs his alert eye towards the viewer, while the matching hen in the foreground seems to peck at the ground. Created in the manner of an ink painting, the superb printing manages to capture the subtleties of the ink brush. An impression of this work is in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, where the curatorial staff have labeled it as a Shijo school surimono. This publisher was also responsible for publishing Yoshitoshi’s masterwork “One Hundred Aspects of the Moon”. We can assume that this was published in the Year of the Rooster as a felicitous New Year’s greeting or decoration for the home. There is a date of Meiji 30 (1897) above the signature at right, and a date of Meiji 34 (1901) in the publisher's information, lower left.
