Winter-blooming Tree-Peony and Winter Wren. Number 11 in Rakusan’s finest bird-and-flower series. The Japanese title may be translated “Winter-blooming Tree-peonies and Wren (Winter)” {Kan botan ni misosazai (fuyu)}. A sophisticated composition, we see a cropped view that includes the bamboo stake and the woven grass mat that were employed by the Japanese to protect the winter-blooming tree from the weight of winter snow. From the 2nd edition, published between 1936 and 1940 by the artist.
