Title: The Setting Sun at Nagareyama 流山
Date: Ca. 1924-1927
Terrific blue-themed (aizuri-e) scene of sailboats on the Tone River near Mount Nagare. We see the main boat sailing away from us, a rather unusual vantage point, while another sailboat is cropped lower left and a man ferries several customers by oar across the river at lower right. This work has a somewhat different color scheme than is usually found for this design. Instead of an orange sunset, the horizon is pink. and the men wear deep blue robes. The work is not faded, as we still see the pink of the woman’s obi at lower right as well as the yellow of the cargo. There is the number “207” stamped verso, perhaps meaning that this might have been a sample that could have been ordered by secondary dealers overseas.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
