Yoshitoshi: Competition of Drunks; Nobleman and Lawyer (Sold)
Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: Competition of Drunks; Nobleman and Lawyer
Series: Comparison of Drunken Stupors (Kigen kurabe)
Date: 1885
A Nobleman (Kazoku) and a Lawyer (Daigennin). The nobleman at top seems seized by existential angst, leaning back on his fancy cushion. On the coral tray before him are various foods as well as western-style glass drinking goblets. The lawyer Has set down his valise and raises his hand in argument, or perhaps persuasion. The prints in this rare series concern drunken conversations or monologues by people of various occupations. The writing is by Ryûtei Tanehiko (1783-1842), most famously the author of Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji. This was intended as a chûban series, but here is an uncut example of two designs.
