Title: Taira no Kiyomori Sees Skulls in the Snowy Garden
Date: August 1883

Kiyomori suffered terrible visions of the karmic effects of his evil deeds at the end of his life. Here he sees the skulls of the enemies that he had had killed staring at him in a snowy garden at his palace in Fukuhara. Even the stone lantern bears empty eye sockets that stare at him with reproach. Yoshitoshi designed another triptych showing the King of Hell appearing in a fever dream to Kiyomori. The dark sky features mica, and there are other luxurious printing embellishments.
