Yoshitoshi: Knife-wielding Hag of the Lonely House (Sold)
Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: Knife-wielding Hag of the Lonely House
Series: Essays by Yoshitoshi (Ikkai zuihitsu)
Date: 1872
Scene of an innocent beauty grappling with the Hag of Adachi Moor. The withered vines in the background match the withered and terrible skin of the Hag, who wields a giant knife. This story was illustrated numerous times by Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi’s teacher, and he also illustrated it a number of times. Although highly dramatic, this is not as explicit as his grisly diptych version, where we see the Hag about to cut open the belly of a helpless victim.
