Yoshitoshi: Boshin War (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: Boshin War
Date: 1868

The Bloody Battle of the Takeda Warriors. (Takeda yûshi kessen no zu). A warrior rests on an oversized cannon, right, his right arm holding a severed head on a naginata. Left is a man going full speed on horseback, the smoke and fire of war behind him and a row of troops. This is a disguised view of the Boshin War, the civil war that was happening at the time of the print. Censorship of current events was still strong, so Yoshitoshi set the contemporary battle (with cannon) in the distant past.
