Yoshitoshi: Guns and Smoke (Sold)
Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: Guns and Smoke
Date: 1867, 7th month
The Great Battle of Kawanakajima in Kai Province (Kôyô kawanakajima ôkassen). A rather puzzling image of a battle that was fought between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin in the mid 16th century. The soldiers pictured here are wearing backpacks and single-and double-breasted jackets with buttons. Two fallen soldiers carry bugles. The date makes it too early for the Boshin War, so it probably portrays an ugly incident with foreigners. Perhaps these are meant to be foreign soldiers firing on samurai who only bear swords and naginatas.
