Yoshitoshi: Battle at Honnôji Temple (Sold)
Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: Battle at Honnôji Temple
Date: 1868
Scene from the famous battle of Honnoji Temple in Kyoto, when Oda Nobunaga was betrayed by Akechi Mitsuhide and forced to commit suicide. In this design the central figure parries a naginata thrust as he raises his sword and charges into his foes at left. All around are plumes of smoke, and we see areas of fire as well. On the ground is a severed arm with the hand still clutching a decapitated head.
