The Buddhist saint Nichiren is miraculously spared execution, even though he is kneeling and his back is turned to his assailant, whose sword has shattered into pieces. A magical reddish light glows from the upper left of the composition, transforming the stormy night. This took place in the reign of Kameyama, the 91st emperor. Provenance: Toshikata
