Yoshitoshi: The Lonely House on Adachi Moor (Sold)
Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: The Lonely House on Adachi Moor
Date: 1885
Yoshitoshi’s most shocking design. The hag of Adachi Moor is a theme Yoshitoshi returned to many times, as did his teacher Kuniyoshi. The total helplessness of the pregnant woman, combined with the pure evil of the wrinkled crone is brilliantly executed and technically genius. This design seems to tap into the archetype of the crone--elderly women blamed and misunderstood for centuries in many cultures. First state, with the purple bruise-marks on the victim.
