It is said that Susanô no Mikoto, a legendary male in Izumo (present Shimane Pref.) killed a monstrous eight-headed dragon, which was threatening Princess Kushinada on the river Hi in Izumo. Susanô no Mikoto is trying to slash the dragon with his long sword. From the tail of the dragon he drew a sword, which was enshrined in the Ise Shrine as a holy sword, Murakumo no Tsurugi. Princess Kushinada is waving her Shinto wand. This dramatic scene is depicted in the horizontal hand-scroll format. This design is dated a few month’s after Yoshitoshi’s death in 1892; it is safe to assume that the publisher worked from finalized drawings left by Yoshitoshi.
