Yoshitoshi has chosen the most heartbreaking scene to illustrate a popular kabuki play. Sôgorô was chosen to hand in a petition to the Tokugawa shogun Ietsuna to beg for an alleviation of taxes that are crushing his fellow villagers. For this, he,his wife and children were put to death in 1655.
