The “Jewel Maiden” Tamamo no Mae stands regally before the sesso seki, or death stone, from which she has just been released by the virtuous priest Genno. She is attired in the style of the Heian Court, with flowing loose hair and a spiderweb-printed outer robe. Two descending geese frame the moon, adding a mournful association.

This print seems to be another warning signal to men as to the hidden dangers of beautiful and accomplished young women.
