The story of Shiraito of Hashimoto-ya, from the series “New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures”. This series illustrates highlights from popular kabuki plays. Here we see the wife of the samurai Suzuki Mondo, dressed in a man’s cloak and perhaps about to confront the courtesan Shiraito, presumably the figure pictured at left looking rather disheveled. Shiraito and Suzuki Mondo were lovers. In the background we get a glimpse of the drunken revelry that was the mainstay of courtesan’s business.
