Yoshitoshi: Station Okabe on the Tokaido (Sold)

Title: Station Okabe
Series: Suehiro goju-san tsugi (Folding-fan Fifty-Three Stages)

Two flag-bearers from the shogun’s procession crest a hill between steep cliffs, likely the Utsunoya Pass. Okabe is the 21st station on the Tokaido Road, and Yoshitoshi’s vantage point mirrors that of Hiroshige’s famous depiction of this station in the series known as the Hoeido Tokaido. This series follows the shogun’s procession from Edo to Kyoto in 1863. Yoshitoshi designed fifteen of the fifty-five works in this series.
