The daimyo procession is transported across the gap between Laka Hamana and the Pacific to the next station, Arai. Ordinary folks would get across by ferry. Leading the flotilla is a steam-powered ship, adorned with banners. A young Yoshitoshi has echoed Hiroshige’s design from his popular “Hoeido Tokaido” series.
This series follows the shogun’s procession from Edo to Kyoto in 1863. Yoshitoshi designed fifteen of the fifty-five works in this series.
