Title: Mashira no Denji Drinking Water from a Dipper
Series: Biographies of Modern Men (Kinsei kyôgiden)
Date: 1866

Mashira no Denji, his expression still focused with the intensity of battle, takes a break from fighting to drink water from a dipper at a stone cistern. His hands, arm and foot are bloodied, and he leans heavily on a sharpened bamboo staff that is also covered in blood. He wears a robe with wave patterns with a white hare near the neck. The orange maple leaves at his feet indicate that it is autumn. The text is written by Sanzan-tei Arindo. This series was one of Yoshitoshi’s earliest major efforts and chronicles the men involved in violent clashes between two gambling rings in Shimosa Proince in 1849.
