Title: A geisha sits for a photograph at “Twelve O'Clock Noon”
Series: Twenty Four Hours with the Courtesans of Shinbashi and Yanagibashi (Shin-Ryû nijû-shi toki)
Date: 1880

A geisha sits for her photography portrait, her expression quite fixed. She is posed on a western-style chair, and the table next to her has a western-style tablecloth. The grey-blue of her kimono has oxidized due to the lead-based pigment that was intentionally employed. Above we see a glimpse of the photographer. In this series, every hour of a geisha's day is depicted in 24 prints, starting at 1:00. Each work is a half-length portrait of a beauty engaged in an activity that generally corresponds to the actual activity of a geisha at that particular time of day. Here the text is written by the owner of Tenten-dô in Kyoto.
