Yoshimori: Station Ishibe on the Tokaido (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Utagawa Yoshimori
Title: The Shogun’s Procession at Ishibe
Series: Suehiro goju-san tsugi (Folding-fan Fifty-Three Stages)
Date: 1865

Ishibe was the 52nd station on the Tokaido Road, close to the road’s terminus in Kyoto. Here we see members of a contingent of the shogun’s procession marching onward at bottom in perfect order and symmetry, a man beating a drum to march by near the rear and a man holding a company banner towards the front. We see another contingent of men adjusting their uniforms and stretching, preparing to get back on the road after their rest. This series follows the shogun’s procession from Edo to Kyoto in 1863.
