Utamaro II: Courtesans Entertaining (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kitagawa Utamaro II
Title: Courtesans Entertaining
Date: ca.1805

A seated beauty pointedly gestures across the room as her companions react with interest. Two entertainers play instruments, while another holds a serving dish. In the background we see more evidence of entertainment. The Met has what must be the middle sheet for this triptych; it creates a bigger story, as the lady on this sheet is pointing towards two departing courtesans, who seem to be leaving in a huff. Cherry blossoms bloom in the foreground.

Condition: Very good impression, color and condition. Minor repairs near margin.
