Japan celebrated the visit of French circus, Cirque Soullier in Yokohama on August 8, 1871 and then in Tokyo on the grounds of Shôkonsha (Yasukuni Shrine) in December. Frenchman Soullier was then 62 years old and had staged, it was said, the best equestrian act in the world. They performed assorment of dare-devil riding stunts, arial acrobats but the most impressive was the Circassian and English horses.
