Elizabeth Keith: Seated Japanese Carpenter (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Elizabeth Keith
Title: Seated Japanese Carpenter
Date: 1936

With pencil writing verso that may be by the artist that reads “Diaku-san. Japanese Carpenter”. Extremely scarce work that was most likely also carved and printed by the artist. Miles lists an edition of 100, but probably the edition was smaller than this number. Kendall Brown offers the following description: “Keith initially learned printmaking after Watanabe Shôzaburô encouraged her to let him turn her designs into prints, and she sat by the carver and printers as they produced and printed the blocks. In 1931 Keith spent several weeks honing her skills at the Tokyo studio of Yoshida Hiroshi. This print was reportedly both cut and printed by Keith, but she may have had help from professional artisans.” Brown also gives the date as 1936 rather than the Miles date of 1925.
