Title: Genji Dreaming Triptych
Date: 1860/10

Picture of Genji in the Nise Murasaki Genji at Suma (nise murasaki genji no sugata: Suma). Mitsu-uji retreated in Suma and sank into deep solitude, thinking of the cherry blossoms on the river bank. Prince Genji, swathed in luxury at left, dreams of a time and place involving cherry blossoms, a gesturing beauty, and a sailing vessel. Those around him in the waking world seem concerned. Perhaps this is prior to his many traveling adventures. What is interesting is the dream bubble that snakes out of his chest and takes up the whole upper half of the print, although it is invaded by the severe man who stands at left.
