Chikanobu: Cat Witch Triptych (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Yōshū Chikanobu
Title: Cat Witch Triptych
Date: 1880

A work based on "Saga no oku y -my ki-dan", which itself is derived from the Saga Nabeshima [clan] disturbance, which is particularly well-known among the various stories about transformed/bewitched cats causing disturbances. O-Toyo, favorite concubine of Namishima Taishu (modeled after the feudal lord of Saga, Nabeshima Mitsushige), is mauled to death by a bewitched cat [or cat-spirit] that holds a grudge against Taishu, which then possesses O-Toyo. At the center of the scene is O-Toyo as possessed by the cat, with cat ears that are probably a dramatic kabuki device. See the attached sheet for a comprehensive description of this work.
