Considered by the artist as one of his best designs, this is number 30 in Rakusan’s finest bird-and-flower series. White-winged Widowbird (known as Hagoromo-chû, “feather-robe bird” and Tawny Daylily. Titled at bottom in Japanese “Yabukanzô ni hagoromichû (shoka)”. The widowbird is an exotic African species often kept in aviaries. This work is from the first edition, which was known to require 120 printing impressions to complete each print. It was printed between 1929 and 1933 and has the Edition I watermark in the lower margin. The background features sprinkled gold.
