Yoshitora: An English Couple Yokohama-e

An English woman rides a horse, stopping to converse with her husband. She wears a riding skirt that seems to imitate hakama trousers. The man wears a bowler hat and smokes a cigarette and holds a yellow cane. The background imitates copperplate engraving, and is probably meant to depict their home country. 

Beginning in 1860, Yokohama-e reflect the fascination with the strange customs and manners of the foreigners that were newly arrived in Yokohama. 

Condition: Very good impression, color and condition. Nibble at one corner and minor discoloration on the woman’s visage and some minor stains.
