Artist:  Yamagishi Kazue (1891-1984)
Title: Shichirigahama Beach (Seven-Ri Beach) 七里ヶ浜   Date: Ca. 1929

Series: One Hundred Views of Japan

The famously scenic view of Mount Fuji as seen from Shichiragahama beach. Woodblock print artists who have immortalized this view include Hokusai and Hiroshige in the 19th century and Hasui in the 20th century. This artist worked primary as a woodblock print carver, and his strength in printing shows through in a unique array of textures combined with a bold color palette. Note the care taken with the soft spectrum of colors on the sandy beach, as well as the layers of green in the water and the rich blue on the grassy hills. The printing is beautiful, and the style unique to this artist, even within the extremely creative milieu of the early Showa period, as it has elements of both sosaku hanga and shin hanga.  Kazue Yamagishi was a versatile artist: after studying Western-style painting and sculpture, he started as a woodblock carver, and he became one of the best, carving woodblocks (in a variety of styles) for many artists, including Yumeji, Kiyokata, Hiroshi Yoshida, Paul Jacoulet and Kôshirô Onchi. His self-designed prints were landscape prints and include the series One hundred views of Japan, One hundred views of East Asia & One hundred views of the world, all done before WWII. Between 1926 and 1929 he was sent by the Ministry of Education to travel the USA and Europe in order to demonstrate woodblock printing techniques.
