The famous red gate entrance of Imperial University, which was built in 1827 and escaped the destruction of WWII and has been designated an Important Cultural Treasure. It still stands at the entrance to the University of Tokyo, considered one of the finest universities in Japan. This work is part of a portfolio of 15 prints that were published by the Japanese Print Association as a reminder of what was lost during the war, done by a number of prominent sosaku hanga artists. This work has been lightly hinged to a lovely green mat, which is included.

Masao Maeda was a sosaku hanga artist who met Hiratsuka Un’ichi in 1923, and later joined the First Thursday Society, which was led by Onchi Koshiro.
