Five Manly Men (Gonin Otoko) pose against an evening background with overhanging plum blossoms. We see the actor Arashi Rikan II as Hotei Ichiemon (lifting robe, both arms visible); the actor Ichikawa Ebizô V as Kaminari Shôkurô (lifting robe, one arm visible); Ichikawa Danjûrô VII as Gokuin Senemon (both hands grasping towel); the actor Ichikawa Kuzo II as An no Heibei (with back facing the viewer); and the actor Iwai Kumesaburô III as Karigane Bunshichi far right, looking left. The exact order of the pentaptych is not known. From the play Koigoromo Karigane-zome, held at the Kawarazaki Theater in 1852.
