Title:Women Taking Rest in a Field (Ishite Matsuyama)
Date: ca. 1933

Interesting sosaku design showing two women in traveling clothes pausing on a path next to bright green rice fields to take rest. They wear large traveling hats and each have walking sticks. Perhaps they are breaking for lunch. Beyond the rice fields we see a small village, with a rounded mountain rising as a backdrop to the scene. The place may be the area of Ishite in Matsuyama, where Ishiteiji Temple is number 51 of 88 temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Shigetoshi was born in Aichi prefecture and studied with Hiratsuka Un’ichi. He was a member of Nihon Hanga Kyokai from 1932, and contributed to the series One Hundred Views of New Japan in 1940. A beautifully printed, seldom-seen design that is a terrific example of the creative expression of the sosaku-hanga movement..
