Title:  Evacuating a Princess during The Ansei-Era Earthquake
Date: 1889

In the immediate aftermath of one of the Ansei great earthquakes (1854-55) we see the organized chaos of a hurried evacuation of a princess from what might be Edo Castle.  As the men must be forbidden to enter the women's quarters even in an emergency, they wait for the attendant ladies to shoulder the luxurious palanquin themselves until they have exited the quarters.  A single man with a lantern exits with the women, probably a trusted member of the household.  The spray of ashes in the sky has been added by hand, so it is unique in each impression.  A rather scarce design in mint condition.
