Tomobiki (A Bad Day for Funerals). Sasaki Taketsuna (the historical Sasaki Moritsuna) stands on the shore of the inland sea, actively listening while the fisherman Todayu indicates where the water is shallow enough for troops to cross. Castles may be seen on the far shore, and plovers rise up in a line behind the men. This series pairs historical figures with auspicious and inauspicious days in Japanese astrology. Although the prints were produced in 1860, the designs are from much earlier in Kuniyoshi’s career. The irregular cartouche was a feature in Kuniyoshi’s earliest series, but here the production values are much higher.
