Kuniyoshi: Agematsu: Eda Genzô

Title: Agematsu: Eda Genzô

Eda Genzô has climbed a tree and sees the glowing lanterns of an approaching attack force, disguised as pilgrims as they enter the city of Kyoto. The name Agematsu can be interpreted as “up a pine tree”, so there is also wordplay at play here. This story is also from the life of Yoshitsune, always a fertile source for Kuniyoshi.
