Kokugikan enjo (The National Sumo Arena in Flames). A black pall hangs heavily above, and fire fills the space as conflagration engulfs the historic Kokugi-kan building following the 1923 earthquake. A beautiful rendering of a tragic scene. This series was commissioned by the publisher Gahosha to record damage in the aftermath of the Great Kanto earthquake of 1 September, 1923. The enormous loss of life is well-known, and devastating fires destroyed much of Tokyo and Yokohama.
