Artist: Fumio Kitaoka (1918-2007)
Title: Snow Falling on an American town
Date: 1966

Greeting-card perfect view of snow falling on an American village. Two pedestrians and two black birds make their way through the heavily falling snow. The snow on the ground has been printed in a very complex and pleasing manner, with both  positive and negative space used in the woodblocks, and soft green and blue colors to give depth. The white snow against the black trees is also very effective. Artist’s proof. Fumio Kitaoka was one of the most important students of Unichi Hiratsuka, whom he studied with at the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko. He also studied with Koshiro Onchi after the war. In the mid 1960s Kitaoka tought at the Minneapolis School for Art as a Fullbright visiting professor and at Pratt Graphic Arts Center in New York. It would then make sense that this is a scene from an American town. Oversized.
