Tuchiya Sozo holds one sword at the ready as he peers over a partition. We sense that he is ready for action. Soft lines of grey rain are falling, and we see a pine bough above him. The soldiers depicted in this series are given identities from pre-Edo period Japan to circumvent the ban on modern history. The men portrayed are actually from the civil war that Yoshitoshi witnessed firsthand in 1868. The series has strong Western elements.
