Artist: Unknown
Title: Kumiage-e
Date: 1895 (Meiji 28)

The “kumiage-e” (pictures for constructing) are to be cut out and backed by other paper for strengthening in order to construct a three-dimensional scene. Three sheets of cut-outs show here the scene of the Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) at Paektu Sanchulgi in northern Korea on the border to China. On the first sheet on top it says this is the finished scene, and the dimensions are written. The title is written outside the frame of the pictures. During the Sino-Japanese war (June 1894- Apr.1895) patriotic fervor swept the country, and ukiyo-e artists such as Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915), Toshihide (1863-1925) and others were preoccupied by war topics.
