Toshi Yoshida: Sacred Grove (Pencil Signed) (Sold)
Artist: Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995)
Title: Sacred Grove (Kami no mori) Date: 1941
A small red shrine is tucked amidst the shade of towering cryptomeria trees. Shinboku (”sacred tree”) were trees considered the dwelling places of kami, and even groves like this one could be regarded as sacred. These giant and ancient Japanese cryptomeria were traditionally considered to have a special link to kami. There is a similar setting to be found at Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi, but it is difficult to pinpoint the exact place that the artist has chosen to depict. This is a pencil-signed, lifetime edition.
