Senior Japanese naval officers aboard a ship plan their strategy during the Sino-Japanese War. It is the eve of Japan’s decisive victory for control of the Yellow Sea, which was reportedly the first naval battle in history between steam-powered fleets. They sit on western chairs at a table draped incongruously with a flowered western tablecloth. Everything seems calm and orderly; the calm before the storm.
